Glanbia Consumer Foods have recently established a state of the art UHT milk and cream processing plant in Lough Egish Co. Monaghan. This new facility has the capacity to process 100 million litres of milk per year and will produce products using the Avonmore brand for export to markets worldwide. ATC Automation developed an integrated vison system to automate inspection on their carton production line.
The Background
To improve quality and automate inspection Glanbia required an integrated vision system to inspect cartons of UHT milk coming off their production line.
The proposed vision system was required to perform four key inspections on each UHT carton, a pull ring presence inspection, a cap seal presence inspection, an excess plastic flash inspection and a best before date presence inspection.
The Solution
Based on an Omron platform the proposed system consisted of a FZ vision controller with an integrated LCD display along with two FZ-SQ colour cameras with built in high powered lighting.
The integrated services division of ATC Automation installed and commissioned the vision system which was capable of reliably performing the inspection checks as initially determined.The system also has a reject output capability enabling Glanbia to reject UHT cartons which failed any of the inspection checks.
The Future
The installation of the vison system will assist Glanbia in driving continuous quality improvement while helping to reduce costs on the Glanbia UHT milk production line. The vision system installed is also capable of inspecting 300 cartons per minute meeting the production requirements of this line in to the future.
